The film was premiered - Galas Presentations at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. Turkish-born French director Deniz Gamze Ergüven is recognized as her film "Mustang" was a surprise and was widely rewarded.
We are in 1991 in a popular neighborhood in Los Angeles, South Central a 15-year-old girl, Lataha Harlins enters a supermarket, she spots a bottle of orange juice and she puts it in her back pocket, she the intention to steal her, we can not say, the Korean grocer saw her and she lost her temper so Latiha told her that she intended to pay her, as the woman becomes hysterical, Latiha slaps her and then the grocer takes a pistol and fires point-blank and kills the girl, the investigation will show that the girl had the intention to pay, she had 2 $ in the left hand. At the trial the manager will receive a five-year suspended sentence. Time passes and the African American Rodney King is beaten by Los Angeles police, an amateur videographer films the scene of this arrest. In 1992 the police trial was in full swing, somewhere in the popular district of Millie, which brought up children from all over the world, children whose parents were absent or in prison and who were now his own, Millie was living a little trickery, in large part she makes cakes that she sells. The biggest, Jesse gives him a hand, the latter is even infatuated with a girl, Nicole squatting left and right and has a strong character. Neighbor Ollie is a first-time grouch and does not miss the opportunity to show his bad mood. In the meantime, the trial of the police is unfolding and the spirits are warming up ...
The film tells us about the riots of 1992 in the South Central district of Los Angeles and of course the two triggers of this latent tension and especially of the trial that followed or the people were acquitted. It must be said that the lawyers of the police did not hesitate to prove the most unlikely elements of the kind the unfortunate King violently hit the unfortunate truncheons of the police officers by giving them impulses. There is an atmosphere in the neighborhood that is almost terrifying and the police are very aggressive with malicious intent and arbitrary arrests. The neighbor of Millie, who was thought to be badly dressed, is quite a good guy and the film is driven by these two heads Halle BERRY and Daniel Craig in a rather new role for him. A very good film studded with images of archive which makes well feel the tension which preceded its riots and which highlights the action of a remarkable woman. A film that did not have any noisy publicity and no planned commercial film that deserves a visit.

After the noticed "Mustang", Deniz Gamze ERGÜVEN was awaited with his second realization tour in the USA. The theme of the 1993 riots at L.A. aroused my curiosity. Yet the film is far from convincing. The director seems to lose herself in following her characters without really focusing on them. Halle BERRY mother outmoded and hysterical and Daniel CRAIG nearby neighbor (but not that!) Have a hard time making us believe their character (but it takes a lot of headliners). ERGÜVEN seems lost with his scenario and mixes archival images, scenes of riots or scenes on the edge of ridicule (especially the erotic dream) that leaves the viewer doubtful. A shame because the young Lamar JOHNSON and Rachel HILSON are convincing. Disappointment !
