It is inspired by a true story, that of Leo Sharp, veteran of the Second World War and the oldest "carrier" of a Mexican cartel. It is the latest film directed by Clint Eastwwod who is also in front of the camera.
Earl Stone is a horticulturist and his job takes so much time that he abandons his family and he participates in meetings where he is usually rewarded for his floral creations. On the other hand, his daughter Iris is very angry at her father for not having been present at all the important stages of her life. Unfortunately Earl is now very old and he is no longer in tune with the latest technologies and the company he runs is hard pressed for having abandoned the internet bubble. Once the key of his company under the doormat, he goes away with his old pick-up at his little girl, the latter just takes care and she is delighted to see his grandfather, but when his daughter arrives and his ex-wife, he gets hit hard. As his pickup is full, it is even assumed that his return is due to the fact that he is looking for a roof. So Earl can not bear all these diatribes and goes away. One of the young engagement guests understands that he is in the mud and gives him a business card where drivers are sought to convoy "merchandise" to Illinois. It must be said that the 90 year old grandfather with his old van and his careful driving is not very suspicious. Earl ends up going to the address indicated by saying once is not customary ...
It must be said that the character played by Clint Eastwood is really the old man of the old, veteran of the Korean War and it is difficult to impression. What is less believable is that the horticulturist's profession is so strong that he can prevent him from attending his daughter's communion or graduation. Using a crumbling old man or a candid guy like "mule" is a good idea as in the movie "The Corniaud" even if in the film cited the whole plan turns into a lollipop. The proof is that Earl makes several deliveries without problems and the head of the cartel is right to continue this collaboration and it is even surprising that his staff insist on breaking this business that works very well. A good distribution for a somewhat weak scenario and we must admit that we are bored a lot of these incessant journeys. Of course, the focus is on this man who, in the winter of his life, would want to take a step back to erase the crappy family life he has had and inflict on his loved ones and he is counting on the money he earns travels to redeem himself knowing that he does not carry onions or cell phones. We are still far from "Million Dollar Baby" and "Mystic River".

After a long period of scarcity due to a shortage of interesting films what a pleasure to find a Clint Eastwood at its best.
It must be said that with a film of two Eastwood is heard saying "it's his best film".
With "The Mule" the debate is open, this is perhaps not really his best film, he still signed some masterpiece, but it may be his most personal if you want read between the lines.
There is already a breathtaking cinematographic writing, without the shadow of a free effect, without trying to impress the viewer, everything is simple fluid, flowing from source. We are very far from these films where the director seems to want to show everyone that he is a genius of the image.
At nearly 90 years old Eastwood takes his time to develop his story and camp his characters. He has nothing left to prove and for what is probably his latest film as an actor he is looking quite a terrible look at his past through the story of this old man turned drug smuggler to survive and maybe to get closer to his family that he neglected.
When we know a little about the life of Clint Eastwood, his many wives and offspring we can not help thinking that in the portrait of this man who missed his family life there is a lot of himself until point where for the premiere of this film in which he shows the reconciliation of the character with his daughter, he appeared for the first time in public with one of his daughters he had never recognized. Like an echo of fiction in its reality.
And he tells all this with an obviousness, a strength, a talent that impresses, without deviating from his trajectory with a humor sometimes staggering (troubleshooting on the highway or meeting with bikers (sic)).
This true story is a perfect way to look back on his past and accept it (that's the meaning of the end of the film) with dignity.
A lesson in life as well as a movie lesson.
P.S. For those who would like to understand what the talent of a real director is, just look at how he films the death of the leader of the cartel. Simple, surprising and effective with minimal movement. We are far from the shakes of the camera that would have cut this sequence into a multitude of 5-second shots in all directions to create a shock.

C'est vrai que je me suis souvent posé la question de savoir si cela n'était pas une manière de demander une forme de pardon pour les blessures qu'il a pu provoqué en privilégiant une formidable carrière. D'ailleurs, il plaide lui-même coupable.

While we had not seen Clint Eastwood in front of the camera since 2012, he is back in better shape than ever and made his latest film, a tense false thriller but a real melodrama poignant, captivating but also funny.
He diverts all the clichés that follow him forever, it changes and it's good.
Casting side, that heavy at his side: Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Pena, ...
I went without much conviction, but I really had a good time in front of this very beautiful movie.

I announce the color, for once, I will not be very honest about this point of view. Indeed, Clint Eastwood is the last of the giants, he has accustomed us to masterpieces and, once again, what a pleasure to find him face camera. He is cultured!
While the weight of years is there, but it is still charismatic and its cinema is still fluid.
He offers us a testamentary film, even if it was not his goal, as always, the story and the characters take precedence, no effects of shadows, we follow a character and we attach to it but nothing is made to show us on these best days. He has his weaknesses, his reactions and his replies from the past, the winks to the lesbian bikers, the insults to the Mexicans, his rejection of the mobile phone, in short, it's a man from another time, who try to get by in a new era.
Without wanting to put our eyes on it Clint is Eastwood and that's enough to delight us.

Thank you, Moussier Eastwood!
And Hop a Cultissime more !! Must say that with Mister Clint nothing very surprising!
Detonating yes: Good scenario, very good actors (never as well served as by oneself), well filmed ...
Provided that this Old Clint (yes since the time, he will not blame me for this excess of familiarity ...), can "enjoy" a long time of its nuggets!
We can say Superb, Excellent, Awesome .... etc
To see well!
