After a first show that I found successful, I was very disappointed by this second film. This one sins indeed to my eyes on two crucial points:
-A scenario too busy, too complicated that quickly turns to unnecessary accumulation. There are so many characters, places, actions, debauchery of special effects in this film that everything is flying by speed without anything being deepened. Where the first opus focused on four characters and their relationships, took the time to situate them personally and professionally, the second disperses so much that it disintegrates them. Only Norbert Dragonneau (Eddie REDMAYNE) comes out almost intact from this indigestible porridge. His original personality comes up several times and the film also highlights his close connection with Dumbledore (played by a Jude LAW whose role is like a glove). But the other three are only figurative. Jacob (Dan FOGLER) and Queenie (Alison Sudol) are particularly abused. The first is useless and is content to passively attend events, arms dangling and open mouth of surprise most of the time. The second betrays the cause without one understand why (unless she is completely stupid?), Moreover the scenario has forgotten in passing that she had a sister. As for the new characters, they are nonexistent.
-An absence of relief that results in a monotony of tone throughout the film. This one wants to be very dark but the uniformity never succeeded to Steve KLOVES (the scriptwriter) and David YATES (the director). In the first part, "The Fantastic Animals" (2016) as in the sixth film of the Harry Potter saga they alternated with more happiness the lightness and the drama. In this opus, we are more in the spirit of the two films on the Deathly Hallows: action, dark revelations, dramas and boredom, a lot of boredom. Because without a minimum of human warmth, no emotion is possible. The sermons and criminal acts of Grindelwald (Johnny DEPP who makes the Johnny DEPP) are not terrifying they are just boring.

"The Crimes of Grindelwald" is the second installment of JK Rowling's new "Fantastic Animals" Saga and it's a spin-off of Harry Potter, the author who's gone a while in the thriller returns to his first love: the stories of wizards.
Gellert Grindelwald is imprisoned in a high security cell in America and his transfer to Europe where he must be tried is expected, it goes without saying that the transfer of a wizard as dangerous as him is highly secure, it will be done in a stagecoach with several guards perched on brooms, but the bandit will benefit from a complicity because the guy has supporters and he will succeed to distort company to the people who accompany him in a rather spectacular escape and he will go to take refuge in the French capital. Norbert Dragonneau is at the Ministry of Magic in London, he has been summoned and he is waiting while playing with Pickett, a small Botruc who is in fact a kind of living twig that Norbert still drags in his jacket pocket. We come to get him, his brother Theseus is an auror, that is to say a member of an elite unit charged with tracking black magi. Norbert is told his travel ban is punitive, unless he agrees to participate in the search and arrest of Grindelwald who escaped from prison, but Norbert declines the invitation he does not? is not auror and it is not his job. Departing from the ministry, he will be contacted by Albus Dumbledore who will make him the same proposal, this intrigues Norbert because the director of Hogwarts and certainly the best wizard capable of overcoming this mission, but Dumbledore can not ...
It's still a fantastic story that happens in the late 1920s and well before the adventures of the young Harry Potter, however we will find teachers of the old saga much younger to begin with Albus Dumbledore. The subject is to find the dark wizard Grindelwald who wants to reshape the world of wizards by valuing purebloods, wizards who have no muggle descendants and just hold non-wizards, muggles, in subordinate roles. In history there is also an individual named Belief who is searching for his identity. It goes without saying that we take full eyes, the special effects are hallucinating and we will also add a hint of humor with Norbert the main character who has more than one trick in his bag and Jacob Kowalski, a Muggle who joined the research team to arrest Grindelwald. We take the same actors who have already taken the fold and everything suggests that there will be a sequel. It is less powerful than the original saga and we were attached to the young wizard and his friends, but it can be followed too, the film can be seen in 3D, but it is more expensive.

Newt Scamander (Eddie REDMAYNE) is back!
But with him, it is also Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny DEPP, unrecognizable) who returns, and especially who escapes.
The Department of Magic would like the great Albus Dumbledore (Jude LAW, impeccable as usual) to take care of this unpleasant character.
But Albus does not wish it (1).
However, it will be necessary that someone decides to stop it.
After Newt in New York, here is Newt in Paris. We are still in the 1920s, and our hero is always looking for fabulous animals. But the (black) plot about Grindelwald takes precedence over the wonderful creatures. There are some, of course, but they are no longer the center of attention.
And that may be why I found this episode a bit below the previous one.
Indeed, the wonderful that surrounded the plot in the previous film left to a terrible darkness.
The special effects are always there, still impressive, but it does not work as well.
In fact, it seems to me that the gap between the wizarding world and the real world is missing. We are almost always in the first, even if the Parisian framework of the interwar period is very well made.
It must be said that in general, the sets other elements reconstituted (costumes, hairstyles ??) are very realistic. Not to mention the (rare) creatures always fantastic that sometimes relax the atmosphere and release the constantly rising tension of the film.
With this film, it is the possibility for the fans of the HP saga to find an enchanting place very appreciated: the school of Hogwarts. We can guess more than we see Professor McGonagall (Fiona GLASCOTT), but above all we follow Dumbledore in his Defense Against the Dark Arts course. It recognizes a session that took place with Harry and Professor Lupine in the always magnificent Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban (2004).
We also see the young Leta Lestrange (Thea Lamb) who attended Hogwarts at the same time as Newt, and who was very turbulent.
But Leta grew up (Zoë KRAVITZ), but she still loves Newt who finds him? for his greatest happiness ?? Aurora Tina Goldstein (Katherine WATERSTON).
Not to mention the "muggle" of service: Jacob Kowalski (Dan FOGLER), for whom the world of magic is quite acceptable, since he met Queenie (Alison Sudol), the sister of Tina ( 2).
In general (and before the stunning finale), Jacob has retained his comic role and not always in tune with the world of magic. But it is precisely this offbeat side that gave the salt of the previous film and which has been largely set aside here, giving a result that may be too serious compared to the other films in J.K. ROWLING's universe.
Admittedly, the latter wrote the script, and the complex plot is still relevant. But despite everything, I think that we lose some of the freshness of the original saga.
In addition, the opening sequence which, if it is again very impressive, dulls the interest: the viewer does not really have time to enter the film. Soon the escape takes place in a dark sky that does not distinguish well everything that happens, all in a very fast editing.
Once Grindelwald has disappeared, the film settles and the viewer can finally make his mark.
For the rest, we have several times the opportunity to appreciate the cliques of the original series: some names awaken in us memories and the presence of Dumbledore is a real delight (3), many of his interventions have the same malice that we know in the saga HP.
On the other hand, the presence of Nicolas Flamel (Brontis JODOROWSKY) did not really convince me: its usefulness is quite relative, if not to bring us back to the first episode of Harry Potter (book and film).
(1) We learn why, although fans of the Harry Potter series already knew, the link between the two men is mentioned.
(2) See previous episode.
(3) it is the case to say it!

The scam of the year. The title of the film is "Crimes of Grindelwald" and what have we seen about his crimes? Nothing. I thought he was going to retrace the character's story and his relationship with Dumbledore but no. At the end of 2 hours, we mainly saw the stories of Norbert and his friends. Not to mention the appearance of Nicolas Flamel, like a hair on the soup and especially without interest in the plot. Result, too many stories at once and an incoherent scenario. Once in his life, Peter Yates will look at the story of the characters he puts on stage? The story of Grindelwald is almost false. And I will not talk about this end-of-film announcement (about Dumbledore), that I will not spoil and that has finished me! In short, a good big daube.
